Week of March 24th-28th

I trust that everyone had a fun-filled March Break! It’s been great to hear lots of stories of all the adventures that took place last week.We are back, recharged, and excited to get back into the swing of things in Grade 5 Immersion 🙂

Here’s what’s happening inside our classroom this week:

Grade 5

French- For our dictée this week, we will continue on with le passé composé. This is a very important, yet often confusing verb tense, and thus, we will be spending a great deal of time reviewing this concept before moving on to our quiz. As always, I’d ask that students practice a small section of their worksheet at home each evening.

We are well into our book club activity and I am pleased with the students’ interest and participation thus far. Not only does this activity help to improve our reading and our thoughts about what we’ve read, but it is a great opportunity to practice our oral communication skills as well as we discuss what we’ve read with our peers 🙂

As we further develop our understanding of the past tense, students have started a creative piece of writing of their choice that is set in the past. Following through the writing process will allow students to work on their individual writing goals and share their thoughts and ideas on paper.

In math, we have finished up our study of perimeter and area and will now move onto volume and capacity. Additionally, we will work together and in small groups on our flashback concepts in preparation for our next flashback quiz, which will take place late this week or early next. I would encourage each student to keep working on those problems that may be causing them some trouble at home each night.

Grade 7 and 8 Science

We continue to work through our unit on Heat. This week we will be examining heat’s impact on states of matter and how substances can move through the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) with changes in temperature. We will also begin preparing for our first quiz on these concepts.

Have a fabulous week!

Week of March 10th-14th

Our Student-Led Conferences were a HUGE success! I am so pleased with all the hard work that my students put into these conferences and a big thanks to all the parents for coming out and engaging in your child’s learning. I’d encourage you to keep supporting your children as they strive to reach their goals in each subject area 🙂

On Tuesday, I will be out at a workshop and Ms. Livingstone will be spending the day with my class 🙂

Here’s what’s happening inside our classroom this week:

Grade 5

French- This week, we will return to our regular dictées, with a section of work completed in class each day and another for homework. This week we will be looking at “le passé compose”-the past verb tense. This is a very important verb tense as it allows us to write and speak about events that happened in the past.

In reading this week, we will finally get a chance to start our book clubs. Students will be responsible to read a section of their book each day and complete a small activity to share during their next group meeting. In addition, we will begin to work on our new reading goals 🙂

In writing, we will finish up with our recipes and will move on to starting to create a text using the past tense.

In math, we will finish up our work on area and perimeter. Additionally, we will continue to review our “flashback” concepts. Based on the results of our quiz, I have created some resources for each student to use at home to help with those concepts that may be difficult for them. We will also continue to work on these concepts in class with our “flashback”  questions and classes.

Grade 7 and 8 Science

This week, we will be exploring the particle theory as it relates to changes in temperature and looking at how certain substances can change through the three states of matter based on changes in temperature.

Have a wonderful week and a safe and happy March Break!

Week of March 3-7th

The month of March has finally arrived and as we will discuss in Science this week, it came in like a lamb 🙂 As we look forward to the coming March Break, there are a lot of exciting things happening here at Gulf Shore and in our Grade 5 Immersion classroom.

We are so excited to be hosting our first Student-Led Conferences! We have been working very hard to get everything ready for Thursday and Friday and we will continue to do so this week 🙂 I am very much looking forward to seeing you all later this week and sharing in your child’s progress.

Here’s what’s happening inside our classroom this week:

Grade 5

French- We will have our dictée on Day 2 this week, as we are running a little behind because of the snow storms late last month. Then, we will have a small break before starting our next group of homophones. In place of the dictée this week, we will be working on correcting some sentences with common mistakes that are made in French.

We are finishing up our novel study and later this week, if time permits, we will form our book club groups and start reading our books in preparation for our first  book club meetings. We will also be examining our reading behaviors and will set our new independent reading goals that we will be sharing with you during our conferences 🙂

In writing, we will continue to look at some recipes. I have asked each student to bring a favorite recipe into class this week. We will be exploring the different elements of those recipes, translating them into French and then picking a few to share with you during our conferences 🙂

In math, we are still working on area and perimeter. Last Thursday, we had our first “flashback” quiz. This week, we will be going over the quiz together. We will also be setting our individual math goals for this term.

Grade 7 and 8 Science

This week we will continue with our study of heat, looking at the importance of certain technologies related to heat, atomic theory and its relation to heat, and how to measure temperatures using different types of thermometers.

Have a wonderful week!
