Week of June 24-June 26

Our year together has come to an end. That being said, before we say our final farewell to the 2018-2019 school year, there are a few very important events taking place……

Monday, June 24-Grades 7-9 Semi Formal Dance from 7:00pm-10:00pm.

Tuesday June 25-Sandspit Field Trip (all day). Please remember to bring sunscreen and bug spray. Students will also need a lunch and/or money to purchase their lunch at the park.

Tuesday evening 7:00pm-Grade 9 closing. We will bid adieu to our departing students in our annual closing exercises. Grade 8 students in the band will play that evening, and are thus expected to attend.

Wednesday, June 26-Final day of classes. Students will spend some time in the morning finishing up their clean up. Then, at 10:30am, we will have our Celebration of Learning, as we take time to showcase all the wonderful things that have happened these past 10 months together. Parents are welcome to attend.

Wednesday afternoon we will play some games together outside and chat about summer plans. Finally, students will receive their final learning reports and head home for summer break.

I want to thank each and every one of my students and parents for a fabulous year. It is a pleasure to work with you all and I can’t wait to hear all about your adventures when we return to school in September.

School supply lists will be available during the summer months on our webpage and a copy will be sent home in the final learning report.

Passez un bel été!

Week of June 17th-June 21st

Well today begins our last full week for the 2018-2019 school year. Wow! It seems like every year goes by at the speed of light! It will be sad to say goodbye to such amazing students, but I know everyone is looking forward to summer vacation 🙂

If your son/daughter hasn’t already handed in their permission form and money for our trip to Sandspit, they should do so as soon as possible.

Now here is a look at what we will be working on over the next few days…..

French-Late last week we started our book clubs. Students chose their books, divided up their readings and began to dive into their novels. The focus of this book club will be on theme, as we explore the meaning behind the words we see on the page. We will also spend some time this week finishing up our goals for next year and reflecting on all the learning that has taken place over these past 10 months. Students will also work to create a vision board that will serve as a starting point for discussions once classes resume in September.

Science-With all chapters in our workbooks complete, we can now fully shift our focus to our wind turbines. Students will spend most of the week up in the shop and maker space, prototyping and testing their designs as they prepare for our big competition next Monday. I’m very excited to see just how much energy they can produce with some recycled materials and a small motor 🙂

Grade 9 Science-We are currently working through Chapter 8 on fluids and optics. Student will spend some time this week discussing these concepts and up their final assessments of the Grade 9 program. We will then shift into our final chapter on the fossils.

Grade 7 Science-We are now well into our unit on technology. This week students will plan, design, and create a house that is capable of withstanding an earthquake. This project combines outcomes from both our technology unit and our unit on the Earth’s crust.

Core French 4-9-This week students in Grades 4-6 will finish up their final project for our unit on pastimes. Working in small groups, they will write a song to show off their learning including their interests in sports, music and ways they help out at home.

In Grades 7-9, students will also spend some time learning some vocabulary related to activities we like to do during the summer months and using Flipgrid to make recordings of themselves sharing activities they hope to explore over the summer months.

Have an amazing week! Enjoy the sunshine!

Week of June 10th-June 14th

What a beautiful weekend! The nice weather has finally arrived. That being said, we still have a few more weeks of learning and though it may be hard with the sun shining, focus is still needed to finish the year on a high note. 🙂

On Tuesday, June 11th Immersion Students in Grades 7-9 will travel to Charlottetown to participate in the “FrancoFun” Day being hosted by the Dept of Education. There, students will be treated to musical presentations, games and some delicious food all “en français” 🙂 If you haven’t already sent in your $2.00 help cover the cost of bussing for this event please be sure to do so as soon as possible.
Funding for all activities as well as lunch, will be provided by the Department of Education.

Permission forms for our end of year field trip to Sandspit on June 25th, will be coming home with your child today. Please note the important note regarding go-karts. Permission forms and money ($15.00) are due back by Tuesday, June 18.

Now let’s take a look at what will be happening during our classes together this week…

French-We have now completed our class novel Aller/Retour. Final assessments on this text will wrap up today and our focus will then shift to book clubs to finish out the year. In groups, students will “taste” and then decide on a book to read and discuss together over the next few weeks. Looking ahead to September, we will also finish up creating some learning goals as French speakers, listeners, readers and writers.

Science-This week students will prepare for and then write their assessment on Chapter 8 (simple machines) and continue prototyping their wind turbines.

Grade 9 Science-Today students will write their assessment on Chapter 7 (chemical and physical changes in matter and transformations of energie). Following this assessment we will begin Chapter 8 on pressure and fluids.

Grade 7 Science-We have wrapped up our learning stations and our unit on Earth and Space. Our focus will now shift to technology, as students begin the final unit of the year on engineering. This week we will discuss force and movement.

Core French 4-9-This week students in Grades 4-6 will continue to work on their final project for our unit on pastimes. Working in small groups, they will write a song to show off their learning including their interests in sports, music and ways they help out at home.

In Grades 7-9, students will finish responding to each other, giving some thoughtful suggestions en français based on their fictional Instagram posts. We will also spend some time learning some vocabulary related to activities we like to do during the summer months.

Have a fantastic week!

Week of June 3rd-7th

Week of June 3rd-7th

Our first full week of June! WOW! It is amazing how fast this year has flown by. After today, there are only 3 more Mondays remaining in the school year 🙂

On Thursday (June 6th) students in Grades 6-9 band will show off their skills during their annual year-end concert. A performance for the school will take place at 1:30pm and the evening performance will be at 7:00pm.

On Friday, we will be treated to a visit from author Pierre-Yves Villeneuve. This visit is part of the Salon du livre (French book fair) which is taking place Thursday-Saturday at the Carrfour in Charlottetown. We are looking forward to hearing about how this author creates his stories and having him share some of his work with us.

Next week (Tuesday, June 11th) Immersion Students will travel to Charlottetown to participate in the “FrancoFun” Day being hosted by the Dept of Education. There, students will be treated to musical presentations, games and some delicious food all “en français” 🙂 Please look for a notice that will be coming home today for more details. We are asking students to bring in $2.00 by Friday of this week to help cover the cost of bussing for this event. Funding for all activities as well as lunch, will be provided by the Department of Education.

Let’s take a look at what else will be happening during our week together…

French-Work continues on our class novel Aller/Retour, as we read and discuss together using strategies we’ve been working on all year. We are nearing the end of this novel and will likely begin our final reflections near the end of the week.

We will also wrap up our oral and written language production and comprehension assessments and set our goals from next year.

Science-We are moving rapidly through our technology unit. This week, we will continue our instant challenge activities, putting into action those new learnings and vocabulary we’ve been exploring together. Students will complete Chapter 8 on simple machines and prepare for their final assessment on these concepts. Work will also continue on our wind turbine projects as we wrap up the planning process and begin moving towards the first stages of prototyping.

Grade 9 Science-During our classes together over the next few days we will continue discussions and experiments on physical and chemical transformations on matter, looking in particular at how these changes and reactions happen in our body as we refer back to our work on human body systems from earlier in the year.

Grade 7 Science-This week students will wrap up their learning stations on the seasons, day and night, the properties of light and the phases of the moon. Preparations will then begin for their assessment on these concepts.

Core French 4-9-This week students in Grades 4-6 will continue their final project for our unit on pastimes. Working in small groups, they will write a song to show off their learning including their interests in sports, music and ways they help out at home.

In Grades 7-9, students will finish and then present their fake Instagram post where they must seek out advice on a problem. They will then respond to each other, giving some thoughtful suggestions en français 🙂 We will also take some time to wrap up our oral production and comprehension assessments.

Have a wonderful week!
