Week of March 29-April 2

Spring has officially arrived, and with it will hopefully come more of the beautiful weather we had last week.
This is a short week with the long Easter weekend quickly upon us, but as usual it will be busy and lots of learning will take place šŸ™‚

Learning reports will come home with your child on Thursday, April 1st. Please take the time to review these reports, celebrate your childā€™s success, and help them to set goals to help move their learning forward. You may keep the report itself, but please return the signed envelope with your child on Tuesday, April 6 as recognition that you have received their report card.

Now letā€™s take a look at what will be taking place over our next few classes togetherā€¦..

French-Students should have now created their list of questions and conducted their interviews. This week we will be transcribing those interviews into a cohesive text and writing an accompanying introductory paragraph to present to our readers the subject of the interview that took place.

As part of practicing our listening outcomes, and to celebrate French week, students will have the exciting opportunity to watch a feature film en franƧais. We will be viewing ā€œLe coq de St-Victor.ā€ Before, during and following the movie, students will discuss and show their understanding of the filmā€™s key messages, ideas and themes.

Science-Our goal this week is to wrap up our unit on Space. Students will have the chance to finish any loose ends for any centers they may have not had a chance to complete. They will film their oral presentation on a space mission and its discoveries, and they will use their completed duo-tang from their center work to write an open book assessment on the outcomes of this unit of study.

Grade 9 Science-Today we will complete our review of Chapter 1 (DNA, cell division and genetic diversity) and students will write their final assessment on these outcomes on Wednesday. Following their evaluation, we will kick off our look into the first of many body systems that we will explore over the coming months as we begin our study of the reproductive system.

Grade 7 Science-This week, we will wrap up our look at asexual and sexual reproduction in plants and begin to explore these processes in animals. We are nearing the end of Chapter 4. That being said, students should prepare for an assessment on these concepts later this week.

Grade 5-9 Core French-In Grades 5-6, students will begin their final project for our unit ā€œSuivez-moi.ā€ Working in groups, they will create their ideal school, either digitally or on paper and they will present their school to the class, giving directions to several rooms in their school and highlighting the new vocabulary they have been working on these past few months.

In Grades 7-9, students will continue their study of prepositions in French, so they can work to help a friend find a lost object, giving suggestions as to where the object may be.

Have a fantastic long weekend! I hope the Easter Bunny finds you šŸ˜‰

Week of March 22nd-26th

I hope that everyone had a restful and relaxing ā€œstaycationā€ and got to enjoy the beautiful weather weā€™ve been having these past few days. It sounds like we are in for a beautiful and warm week šŸ™‚ Despite all that the last year has brought, we are so lucky to live in such an amazing place like P.E.I.

This is our last full week of the month of March and we will be busy wrapping up assessments in preparation for our learning reports, which will be sent home before the Easter long weekend.

Here is a sampling of what we will be up to during our time together this weekā€¦..

French-This week we will dive back into our unit on interviews. Students will return to creating their interview questions and they will conduct their interviews in the next few days. We will also jump back into some oral language activities to help us meet our learning goals, specifically around using two verbs in sequence. Mme Sophie, our French language monitor, also has some activities planned to help us celebrate French week.

Science-This week students will wrap up their learning stations on Space. We will continue to explore topics including the planets, meteors, comets and the northern lights right. They will then begin to prepare for their assessment on these outcomes as well as for an oral presentation on a space mission and its discoveries.

Grade 9 Science-Tomorrow we will wrap up the beginning chapter of our biology unit, as we discuss the differences between cells, tissues, organs and systems and take a first look at the body systems we will be studying over the next few months. Students will then begin to prepare for their assessment on these concepts, which will take place on Day 4 (next Monday).

Grade 7 Science-Before the break, students were introduced to the differences between sexual and asexual reproduction. This week, we will look at how plants reproduce in both these ways. Starting with 4 forms of asexual reproduction and then moving towards sexual reproduction as we study flowering plants.

Grade 5-9 Core French-In Grades 5-6, students will wrap up their dance routine videos and begin to create and play a board game combining their knowledge of directions from the past few months. In Grades 7-9, students will learn prepositions in French, so they can work to help a friend find a lost object, giving suggestions as to where the object may be.

Have a marvelous Monday and a great week ahead!

Weeks of March 4th-5th and March 8th-12th

With all the storms we have been having over these past few weeks, in addition to the red alert, it feels like itā€™s been a forever since weā€™ve been together and Iā€™m anxiously awaiting to return to the classroom in the morning. March certainly has come in like a lion. Hereā€™s hoping that it will be smooth sailing ahead and that it will go out like a lamb šŸ˜‰

Our learning conferences will be virtual this time around. I will be contacting parents tomorrow and Friday at their listed time through the method they selected on the Google Form sent out earlier in the week. If you chose to have a Google Meet, you will be receiving an email shortly before your interview time with the link. I look forward to discussing your childā€™s progress with you.
Tomorrow, students will also arrive home with their learning portfolios for you to have a look at and discuss their goals for the coming term.

The book fair will be open as well as virtually. This is a wonderful way to pick up some reading material for the March Break, all while supporting our school library.

Because parents and teachers will be participating in conferences on Friday, there will be no classes for students on that day.

Now here is a look at what we will be learning together tomorrow and during our week before the breakā€¦.

French-We are working our way through our anthology unit ā€œLā€™art de lā€™imageā€ as we continue to explore the interview text form. This week students will finish their reading assessment on this type of text and work on preparing questions for conducting an interview of their own. Our word work continues with homophones and we will continue to work towards our independent reading and oral language goals through our warm up activities. Mme Sophie has also been working on many exciting activities to help us celebrate “la semaine de la francophonie.”

Science-Students have now completed half of our learning stations on Space. We will continue to explore topics including the planets, meteors, comets and the northern lights right through until the break.

Grade 9 Science-During our time in the lab this week and next, we will continue our look into how the cycle divides through mitosis and meiosis. We will then round out Chapter 1 with a look at how cells are specialized in the human body and how they work together in tissues, organs and systems. As Iā€™ve stated in previous posts, it is important for students to review new and difficult terms on a regular basis, as to not become overwhelmed with this vocabulary right before assessments.

Grade 7 Science-With the storm and circuit break days putting us a little behind, our quiz on the parts of the cell and their functions complete will happen tomorrow. With our quiz on the parts of the cell and their functions complete, we will move into the second part of our biology unit. In this section, students will look at reproduction and learn that different species use different ways to reproduce. This section will kick off with a look at the differences between asexual and sexual reproduction.

Grade 5-9 Core French-In Grades 5-6, students will combine their understanding of how to give directions in French with their knowledge of technology and physical education as they create both an interactive and virtual dance routine. In Grades 7-9, students wrap up their listening to a variety of community lost and found notices, as they put their growing list of describing vocabulary to good use; identifying the lost objects.

Have a fabulous weekend and a wonderful week ahead! I cannot wait to see everyone tomorrow! Stay safe šŸ™‚
