Week of May 30-June 3

This week we will officially turn our calendar pages to June. How can that be? This year, despite our many pivots and challenges has flown by! There are only a few weeks left of the school year, but as always, they will be busy!

Here is a look into some of the learning taking place during our classes together this week…

French-We are moving right along in our comic strip unit. Students will continue to learn about the elements of this type of text this week and share in reading some comic strips together. They will then begin planning out their own comic strips, incorporating our work on reflexive verbs into their storyline.

We will also continue assessing our progress this year regarding our language learning with our DELF assessments, as we look to set goals for next steps in the fall.

Science: We will spend time this week taking a deeper look at energy and how systems transform energy from one type to another. We will also begin preparing for the first assessment of our engineering unit which will take place next week.

Grade 9 Science-Our focus these next few days will be on biotechnology, as we incorporate our work on the human body with our new outcomes in engineering and design.

Grade 7 Science-This week students will continue working through learning stations exploring many different concepts surrounding space including the phases of the moon and eclipses. They will work in teams and participate in interactive learning activities each day for the next few weeks.

Grade 9 English Science-I was so impressed with everyone’s participation in our electric car challenge. This week we will wrap that up with a reflection piece on our experienece with the design process, begin our unit on biodiversity and have a visit from STEAM PEI.

Wishing you all a fantastic week ahead!

Week of May 24-27

I hope that everyone had a relaxing long weekend. What a beautiful one it was! The last full week of May has arrived and with it a lot of learning and preparations for our end of year celebrations. I cannot believe it!

Mask use in schools, on school buses and during school activities/events is now optional for students, staff and visitors. Mask use is still encouraged in indoor public spaces. Individuals who are comfortable to continue to wear a mask will be supported in their decision to do so.

Testing for COVID-19 will also become optional starting today. There was another box of tests sent home last week for those who requested it. Please let the office know if you would like any more or there are also some test kits available through Access PEI.

Now let us take a sneak peak into the what will be taking place during our classes together these next four days…

French-This week we will jump into our unit on the comic strip. Students will spend some time reading some popular French comic strips such as Asterix and Boule et Bill as they explore the elements necessary in this type of text. Once everyone has a good idea of what counts in this type of text, we will also incorporate our work on reflexive verbs into the making of our own short comic.

We will also continue assessing our progress this year regarding our language learning with our DELF assessments, as we look to set goals for next steps in the fall.

Science: Our engineering unit is in full swing, as students continue learning about the components of a system. This week they will work in small teams to create a working object, taking note of each step necessary for both its fabrication and functions.

Grade 9 Science-This week we will finish up our look at our muscles, bones and joints and prepare to write an assessment on these outcomes on Day 6 (Thursday).

Grade 7 Science-With the “earth” portion of our unit on earth and space now behind us, this week students will begin a series of learning stations exploring many different concepts surrounding space including the phases of the moon and eclipses. They will work in teams and participate in interactive learning activities each day for the next few weeks.

Grade 9 English Science-Our electric cars are really starting to take shape! I’m been so impressed with my students’ engagement in their learning and their enthusiasm to create the fastest car possible. Over the next few days, we will put the finishing touches on our cars, race them and then reflect on the ups and downs of the engineering design process.

Have a marvelous week!

Week of May 16-20

Mid-May and spring on PEI has definitely arrived! What a beautiful week last week. Hopefully the nice weather continues. I know for many, the May long weekend is the official start to summer, but students are reminded that we need to hang on just a little bit longer 😉

Students are reminded to continue to take their COVID tests each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, even on days where there is no school. This testing has been extended again, and another test kit request form was sent out last week. If you still require more tests, please let someone in the office know and we will be sure to send them home with your child.

Here is a look into our learning over the next few days…

French-This week we will continue working on “le grand débat des livres.” Similar to Canada Reads, students will defend and promote their book club book to their classmates, showcasing both their understanding of what they’ve read and their oral language and interaction skills.

On Friday, we finished up the movie “Noémie: Le secret.” Students will spend some time finishing up their reflection pieces on this movie, comparing it and the novel of the same name.

We will also begin assessing our progress this year in regards to our language learning with the firsts of our DELF assessments.

Science-We have now finished our unit on space, and we will move into my personal favourite: Engineering. Students will spend the first few classes of this week reviewing the concepts we studied together during this unit last year and then we will kick off the new unit with a look into systems and their components.

Grade 9 Science-As we move along with our study of human body systems, this week we will look at our bones and muscles and their role in the body.

Grade 7 Science-Over the next few days we will wrap up our look at the “earth” portion of our unit on earth and space. Students will work on a project that will summarize their learning for this chapter. Directions, the assessment rubric and some helpful links can be found in Google Classroom.

Grade 9 English Science-Wrapping up our unit on electricity and kicking off our study of engineering, students will work in teams this week on creating an electric car. We will spend most of the week creating the cars before racing them later this week or early next week.
Students will work through the design process, learning about the steps an engineer takes during their work.

Have fantastic week!

Week of May 9-13

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Am I the only one who feels like spring is finally starting? It was so wonderful to be able to soak up some vitamin D 🙂

Students are reminded to continue to take their COVID tests each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, even on days where there is no school for at least the rest of this week. If this testing is to be extended again, we will notify families and send out another test request form. There will be updates to the masking guidelines beginning today well. Teachers will go over the new guidelines with students today. In short, students may take off their masks when seated at their desks. Masks are required in all other locations such as moving through the hallways, on busses and in shared school spaces such as the library or multipurpose room.

Let’s now take a look at the learning taking place during this full week….

French-This week we will finish up our book club novels and begin “le grand débat des livres.” Similar to Canada Reads, students will defend their book to their classmates, showcasing both their understanding of what they’ve read and their oral language and interaction skills.

We will also read the final chapters of our aloud novel “Noémie: Le secret de Madame Lumbago” together and once we’ve finished we will watch the corresponding movie, comparing and contrasting the two as well as comparing this novel with our previous read aloud “Mamie Gangster.”

Finally, if time permits, we will begin our next writing project: the comic strip. Students will begin to examine popular comics, noting their style and storylines.

Science-Over the next few classes, students will have some time to catch up on any learning stations they may have missed or that they didn’t have time to finish before presenting their presentation on an importance space mission and writing their assessment on these outcomes.

Grade 9 Science-Today, students will put the finishing touches on their human body system projects. On Wednesday, they will present their system to their classmates and we will begin to compare these systems and explore their overall importance in the human body later in the week.

Grade 7 Science-Our focus this week will be learning about how tectonic plates move, thus exploring the formation of mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes.

Grade 9 English Science-This week, we will head towards the final parts of our unit on current electricity. Students will begin to prepare for their assessment on the outcomes of chapter 11 which will take place on Friday, May 13th. We will also spend lots of time in the lab, creating circuits with both traditional materials and also with some popular fruits.

Have marvelous Monday and a great week!
