Weeks of December 12-16 and December 19-20

Well folks, we have arrived at the last 7 days of school for this year. There is lots of excitement in the air as everyone looks ahead to our holiday vacation.

Our Leadership Team has been putting together some fabulous activities to get us all in the festive spirit and on Wednesday we will be treated to performances from our K-6 students in their annual concert.

Here is the schedule for those events:
Monday-Anything but a water bottle day (bring your water in something unusual)
Tuesday-Tropical Tuesday-Dress for a tropical holiday vacation
Wednesday-Holiday Theme-Wear your favourite holiday themed items and colours
Thursday-Present Day-Give the gift of yourself (dress up in wrapping paper, bows, ribbon, etc.)
Friday-Pajama Day-Wear your comfy clothes to finish out the week

Now let’s take a look at what will be happening during our classes during this last week and a bit of 2022….

French-As we work through our unit “Bon voyage” students will continue to plan out their travel journals, which we will put together after the break.

Our other main priority over the next few days is to continue our read aloud “Mamie Gangster” and of course as you can imagine, our oral language warm-ups this week will have a holiday theme 🙂

Science-During our classes together this week, we will finish up our chapter on the cell and how substances move between the cell and its environment. The quiz on chapter 3 will take place on Wednesday (Day 5). We will then move into our final section of our biology unit on human reproduction, which we will continue after the break.

Grade 9 Science-This week we will wrap up our section on elements, atoms, molecules and the periodic table with a project entitled “Atomix.” Students will work to create game cards based on all their learning from the past few months. Students will also prepare for and write their quiz on atoms, elements and the periodic table.

Grade 7 Science-As we work our way through our ecology unit, we will begin to discuss taxonomy and habitats. These concepts will be important for a major project which students will start when we return after the break, where they will research and present their learning from Chapter 3 through the eyes of an animal of their choosing.

Grade 9 English Science-This week we will review the names and symbols for the first 20 elements and write our quiz on them. After that, we will take a look at how to draw diagrams of atoms using the information on subatomic particles we learned last week. Students will also test their knowledge of the concepts covered these past few weeks through an in-class assignment. Finally, to celebrate the holidays, students will create a “Chemis-tree” where they will combine their understanding of the periodic table with their creativity.

Have a safe and happy holiday season! I look forward to hearing all about it when students return on January 3, 2023!

Week of December 5-9

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here in at Gulf Shore, as we enter the first week full of December and the last 12 school days of 2022.

On Wednesday, December 7th, band students will present their annual Christmas show beginning at 7pm. What a treat it always is to hear from our band students to help get everyone into the holiday spirit.

There are still a few students who have not returned their signed report card envelope and portfolios. Please get these in as soon as possible, as we like to reuse them for our second term reports.

Now let’s have a look at the learning that will be taking place during our classes this coming week…

French-We are working through quite nicely our new classroom resource #LaClasse our first unit called “Bon voyage.” Our focus this week will be on continuing to learn more about the passé compose verb tense and those verbs that use the verb “être” when forming these verbs. We will finish up the first part of our travel journals, where students will reflect upon a past trip or excursion and create a list of events and activities they completed during their trip.

Our reading of “Mamie Gangster” also continues this week. Students will work in small groups this week to film their discussions using Flipgrid about their ideas, opinions and connections to this text.

Finally, as we begin the holiday season, many of our oral language warm-ups later on this week will have the holiday feel.

Science-During our classes together this week, we will finish up our chapter on the cell and how substances move between the cell and its environment and begin reviewing these concepts in preparation for an assessment on them next week.

Grade 9 Science-We will finish up our look at the families and groups of the periodic table and then shift to looking at how atoms combine to form molecules, as we explore atoms and their electrons in detail; focusing on how atoms become ions and look to gain or lose electrons to become stable.

Grade 7 Science-Once students write their unit test tomorrow, we will have officially completed our unit on chemistry. This week students will begin their new unit on biology entitled “L’univers vivant”-“The living world”. To ease in to this unit before the holidays we will review some of the ecology concepts they studied in Grade 6 and each student will choose an animal which they will research in various ways throughout the unit.

Grade 9 English Science-This week we will continue to explore the atomic theory, subatomic particles and elements and their symbols.
Have a marvelous Monday and a wonderful week!
