Week of March 28-April 1

As hard of it is to believe, we are entering the last week of March and there are only 3 more months of the 2021-2022 school year. Wow! Time sure does fly by!

I am still missing a few report card envelopes. If your child hasn’t returned theirs, please encourage them to do so as soon as possible, so that I can recycle these for the final term in June.

Students are reminded to continue to take their COVID-19 rapid tests each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

There will be no classes for students on Friday, April 1st, as teachers and staff will be participating in professional development activities.

Now here is a snapshot into the learning taking place during our classes together this week….

French-As we continue to look into the interview text form, this week students will finish up their reading assessment and begin to look at what counts when conducting an interview of their own. They will then choose the subject for their interview and, after we review different types of questions, students will begin drafting those that they will pose to their interviewee.

Science-This week students will finish and then present their energy posters. Following this, we will review the concepts studied in chapter 5, in preparation for their assessement on these outcomes on Day 2.

Grade 9 Science-Our main focus this week will be reviewing the concepts covered in the first section of our biology unit on cell division and DNA. Following that assessment (on Day 2) students will begin taking a deeper look into the parts and functions of the first of many human body systems we will study together: the reproductive system.

Grade 7 Science-We will wrap up our study of living things this week. Students will finish up their posters on the three ways animals use to develop their young and will also review for and write their assessment on the outcomes presented in chapter 4, before moving into the first section of our unit on the Earth’s crust.

Grade 9 English Science-We are well into our unit on electricity, in particular static electricity. This week students will learn about conductors and insulators and how objects become charged.

Have an excellent week!

Week of March 21-25

I hope that all my students enjoyed a relaxing and fun March Break.

Report cards were sent home before the break. If you still have your child’s envelope at home, please make sure to sign and return it as soon as possible, so that I will know that you have seen it, and so that I can recycle the envelope for the final term.

Additional COVID-19 test kits were sent home earlier this week. Please continue to test your child on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week.

Let’s now take a peek into the learning that will be taking place during our week back to school…..

French-We will continue to study the interview text form through our anthology unit entitled “L’art de l’image.” Time will be spent these next few days, finishing u up our reading and listening to several different interviews. Later on in the week, we will begin to look at the characteristics of an interview, looking at what counts in this type of text.

Science-As we round out the “Earth” portion of our unit on Earth and Space, we will study different forms of energy. Students will work to research and then present specific energy type this week, outlining their energy type’s advantages, disadvantages, and its impacts on our environment.

Grade 9 Science-This week we will wrap up our first section of our biology unit. Students will work on a case study exploring genetic diversity. We will then take a quick look into the systems we will be studying throughout our biology unit and begin our review of the concepts covered in chapter one in preparation for our assessment on these outcomes next week.

Grade 7 Science-We will begin today’s class with a review of all the concepts we worked on before the break including sexual and asexual reproduction in plants and animals. This will kick start our final review of the outcomes covered in chapter 4, as we begin preparations for an assessment on these concepts early next week.

Grade 9 English Science-Today we will kick off our unit on electricity. We will begin with an inquiry investigation as we start chapter 10 on static electricity.

I hope you are all having a great week!

Week of March 7-11

It was so great to see everyone on Thursday and Friday and to get the chance to celebrate all the wonderful learning that has taken place these past few months. The week leading up to March Break is usually very busy and I’m sure this year will be no exception. Students who may be isolating or who have taken a few extra days for the break, are reminded to check Google Classroom on a regular basis to make sure that they do not miss any important assignments/information.

Report cards will be heading home with students later on this week. Please take the time to review these, sign the envelope and return it back to school with your child so that it may be recycled for the final term’s report in June. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

Now let us take a look at what will be happening during these next few days…

French-This week we will jump into a new unit in our anthology entitled “L’art de l’image.” Our first goal during this unit will be learning about the interview text form. Students will spend their next few classes thinking about someone they would like to interview and explaining why, and will read and listen to several interviews with different artists.

Science-Our focus in the lab this week will be on soil and its layers. We will create a visual representation of soil and spend some time analyzing soil samples from around the country, conducting some tests to see what kinds of soil are ideal for agriculture.

Grade 9 Science-Our discussions together in the lab over the coming days will be around how the cell divides. We will look at the processes of mitosis and meiosis in greater detail, learning the different phases and exploring what the cell looks like during each phases and comparing and contrasting them. Students are reminded to review new terms and diagrams on a regular basis.

Grade 7 Science-This week we will wrap up our look into sexual reproduction in flowering plants and begin to explore how animals reproduce.

Grade 9 English Science-We are so close to the end of our chemistry unit. This week students will apply many of the concepts they’ve studied over the past few months to a few case studies, including deciding which substance: salt or sand should be used on Island roads in the winter. We will also have some fun together through a couple of team building instant challenges, where we will revisit some of the important characteristics that scientists need in order to be successful.

Have a fantastic week and a super March Break! I look forward to hearing all about it when we return on March 21st.
