French Music

The students in Grade 5 Immersion are currently working on a very special project with our French Monitor-Mlle Laurie-Anne….

They are going to create their own song and music video!

In order to help them prepare for this project, we have been listening to lots of french music with Mlle Laurie-Anne when she visits our classroom.

Attached is a list of some of the songs we have listened to so far

Liste chansons francophones

We are very lucky to have Mlle Laurie-Anne with us here at Gulf Shore 🙂

Keep tuned to our classroom blog for updates on this project as it progresses 🙂

Week of October 28th-November 1st

It is hard to believe that the end of October is already upon us. Time sure does fly!

This is shaping up to be an exciting week here at Gulf Shore, as we prepare for Halloween J On Thursday, students are permitted to come to school in costume, but are reminded that they are not to wear any face masks or to carry any toy weapons with them. I have my costume ready as well and I can’t wait to see all of my students dressed up 🙂

To celebrate, on Thursday afternoon our K-6 students will also be having a sock hop and we have been working in art class to decorate our classroom with some spooky sights 🙂

Next week we will have our first set of Parent-Teacher Interviews. I will be sending home time sheets this week. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or if another time would be more convenient.

Here’s a look at what else is happening inside our classroom this week:

Grade 5

French- For our dictée this week we will continue to explore different pronouns in French and how verbs are conjugated according to those pronouns.

In reading and writing, later on in the week we will be starting a unit on poetry. We will listen to some poems during our read aloud this week and together will begin to examine the elements and structure of a poem. Additionally, we will continue to look at different sound structures in French at will fill out our “Carnet de lecture”, responding to what we have read.

We are also working towards publishing our second piece of writing and continue to review the writing traits and the writing process.

Math-Last week, we worked on writing and solving simple equations. This week, we will do a quick review of using our estimation strategies to check our answers and will look at how to multiply and divide numbers mentally. As always, it is very important that students continue to review their multiplication tables and the corresponding division facts, especially those that are causing them trouble 🙂

Science-This week, in our unit on sound, we will continue to explore how sound travels through different states of matter and will experiment moving sound through these different “vehicles”.

Social Studies-Students have started their final project of creating their own fictitious communities and will then start work making a brochure that will promote visitors to their region. Our classroom is filling up with lots of paper towel rolls and cereal boxes as students prepare for this project, and I am looking forward to seeing the finished communities 🙂

Grade 7 and 8 Science

This week, as we continue our study of the Earth’s Crust, we will have our second test of the year on Wednesday, October 30th. Review sheets have gone home, and students are reminded to use these questions to guide them as they study. Once our test is complete, we will begin to look at plate tectonics and how volcanoes are formed.

Have a great week!

Week of October 21th-25th

I’m sure that all my students enjoyed their extra long weekend and are well rested and prepared to start the new week ahead 🙂

Reminders for this week:

On Friday, October 25th, we will be having our first walk to school day of the year. As per usual, buses will drop students at the end of the hill and we will walk up to the school together. Please be sure to dress according to the weather that day.

Here’s a look at what is happening inside our classroom this week:

Grade 5

French- For our dictée this week we will be looking at different pronouns in French and how verbs are conjugated according to the pronoun.

In reading, we will look at ways that punctuation can help us to understand a text and at a few sound structures that can be problematic when learning and reading the French language. Additionally, we will continue to read independently, write down our thoughts in response to what we’ve read and to recommend good books to our classmates.

In writing, as we continue to review the writing process, we will complete our graphic organizers and move towards drafting our second written piece of the year.

Math-As we continue to write equations, this week we will work on solving them using all operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Later on in the week, we will be having a short quiz to mark our progress to date. I would encourage my students to keep practicing their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts at home if any are causing them problems 🙂

Science-As work continues on our unit discovering sound, this week we will look at how sound travels differently through solids, liquids and gases and experiment moving sounds through the different states of matter.

Social Studies-Work continues on the unit “Bâtir une communauté.” Students are working towards their final project of building a fictitious community.

Grade 7 and 8 Science

Our trip to Rackham’s Pond was a huge success and I wish to thank everyone for their cooperative behavior. This week, we will return to our unit on the Earth’s Crust, continuing our study of soil and its components. We will also look at how mountains are formed and begin to study the different types of rocks and the rock cycle. We are closing in on wrapping up the second part of this unit and will begin preparing for another test in the coming days.

Have a wonderful week!
