Week of June 26-28

As we get started on the final moments of the 2022-2023 school year, I just wanted to say how lucky I am to be a Gulf Shore Shark! We’ve had another great year together! I’m looking forward to see what next year will bring, but before we do that, we need to wrap up this one 😉

This week we will spend our time cleaning up our spaces and putting the final touches on the Celebration of Learning.

This evening, beginning at 7pm, students in Grade 7-9 will have their annual semi-formal dance. The dance will take place from 7-10pm. It’s always so lovely seeing everyone all dressed up! Parents are welcome to come before to take some photos, but must leave once we get things started.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 27th, we will head to Cineplex in Summerside to see the movie “Elemental.” Following the movie, we will head down to the waterfront for a picnic lunch and some ice cream from Sunny’s Dairy Bar. Students are reminded to bring their lunch with them and a few dollars should they wish to purchase a treat.

Tomorrow evening, we will hold our Grade 9 closing, as we send our oldest sharks along to Bluefield. Our band students in Grades 6-8 will be providing the music for this event and are asked to arrive at 6:30pm, as the ceremony will begin promptly at 7:00pm.

Finally, on Wednesday morning, we will hold our Celebration of Learning at 10:30am, as we celebrate all the amazing things we’ve accomplished this year and kick off our summer!

Parents are reminded that the school will be purchasing school supplies for all students again this year. Students will need a calculator, lunch bag, headphones, a backpack and sneakers for September.

I wish you all an amazing and safe summer break! I look forward to hearing all about your adventures when we return in the fall.

Passe un été extraordinaire!!!

Week of June 19-23

The last full week of the 2022-2023 school year is upon us! Only 8 more days of school! Wow! What a year it’s been and I’m so looking forward to celebrating it with my students over the next few weeks of fun!

Permission forms were sent home last week for our annual field trip to celebrate a great school year. We will be heading to Cineplex in Summerside to see the movie “Elemental” on Tuesday, June 27th. The cost is $15 for the movie or $25 for the movie and a popcorn combo. If you have not already done so, please send those along as soon as possible so we can get our numbers into Cineplex.

The Gulf Shore Games have been AMAZING! On Friday we will cap them off with a full day of fun and activities! Students will compete in their teams to put the final points on the board. What fun!

Now let’s take a look at what else will be happening this week…

French-Over the next few classes we will finish up and publish our comic strips and then share them with our younger sharks. We will put our listening skills to work as we watch a new release film “en français.”

Science-Our focus for our remaining classes will be on constructing a windmill. Working in small teams, students will create a windmill that they will test to see who is able to convert the most wind energy to electricity.

Grade 9 Science-We had so much fun with our dissections last week. I love seeing the learning come alive in this way! This week we will shift our focus from biology to space, as we wrap up our year with a short section on how distance is calculated across the planets. If time permits, students may also have the chance to create their own electric cars, as they work through the engineering design process.

Grade 7 Science-This week we will finish up our learning centres on space and begin our final section on technology, as students become “engineers” as they work to discover the vocabulary and steps of the design process.

Grade 9 English Science-Our final few classes will focus on biodiversity. Students will explore the school year to see what diversity lies there. We will also discuss taxonomy and how organisms are classified by using a dichotomous “jelly belly” key.

Have a marvelous Monday and a wonderful last full week of school!

Week of June 12-16

Two and a half weeks to go and boy will they be busy! Students and staff will be very busy this week we as begin to wrap up many assessments and prepare for some of the year-end activities that we love so much.

Permission forms were sent home last week for our annual field trip to celebrate a great school year. We will be heading to Cineplex in Summerside to see the movie “Elemental” on Tuesday, June 27th. The cost is $15 for the movie or $25 for the movie and a popcorn combo. All forms and money is due on Friday, June 16.

On Thursday, June 15th students in grades 7 and 8 will head to Scales Pond in Bedeque to participate in the “Adopt a River” program and to release our fish. We will be having a picnic lunch (hot dogs will be provided) at the park and we will be stopping at the Somerset Dairy Bar on our way home. There is no cost for this event, but should students wish to purchase an ice cream or treat, they should bring along a few dollars. A detailed note with all the details was sent home with students on Friday. Please reach out if you have any questions/concerns. Students are reminded that we will go rain or shine, so they need to be sure to dress for the weather. A list of suggested materials to bring was sent home last week.

Here is a look into what we will be learning this week….

French-Our comic strips are starting to take shape! Over the next few days students will finalize the ideas for their texts, begin writing their dialogue and eventually start their drawings. We will look to famous comic book artist Alex A. for some advice over the next few classes, as we watch some videos together that will have him showcasing some of the tricks of his trade.

Science-As we study the work of the engineer, we will continue working through chapter 7 on systems. We will begin preparing for our assessment on these outcomes that will take place later on in the week. Our focus will then shift to creating our own windmills.

Grade 9 Science-We will wrap up our look into biotechnology today and focus on preparing for our final two dissections. Tomorrow students will dissect a sheep’s kidney and on Wednesday, our fetal pig dissection will take place. This are always a highlight for our grade 9 students and one of my favourite parts of the year, as we get to see all our learning come to together through this interactive lab.

Grade 7 Science-During the next few classes, students will work through a series of learning stations exploring the key outcomes related to Space. These concepts include-the phases of the moon, the seasons, eclipses, and how light travels just to name a few.

Grade 9 English Science-As students continue to apply their knowledge of current electricity and learn about the carbon cycle, they will participate in an engineering design case study on wind energy. Working in small teams, students will create a windmill that they will test to see who is able to convert the most wind energy to electricity.

Have a fantastic week!

Week of June 5-9

As my students say “the countdown is on” to the end of the school year, as we have entered the first full week of June. There is still a lot of learning and assessments left to take place over the next few weeks, so hang on, as we always wind up before we wind down 😉

Our band students have been working very hard on several pieces of music over these past few months, which they will share with us on Wednesday, June 7 at their year-end concert. There will be a performance for students and staff in the afternoon and then another for the public beginning at 7:00pm. I cannot wait!

Permission forms will be sent home today for our annual field trip to celebrate a great school year. We will be heading to Cineplex in Summerside to see the movie “Elemental” on Tuesday, June 27th. The cost is $15 for the movie or $25 for the movie and a popcorn combo. All forms and money is due on Friday, June 16.

I’ve sure you’ve heard that we have been participating in the “Fish Friends” program this year. Our salmon have been growing strong in the lab and it is almost time to release them.

Now here is what will be happening during our classes together in the coming days…

French-With our DELF assessments behind us, we will now fully dive into the comic strip text form. Students will continue to read through this type of text to discover its characteristics. They will participate in some virtual workshops with some comic book authors to get some insider tips and we will also begin to write down some ideas for our own comic strips which we will create in the coming days.

Science-Our final unit of the year “Univers technologique” kicks off today. We will explore the exciting work of an engineer over the next few weeks, as students will eventually work through the engineering design process and create their own windmills. More details to come soon 😊

Grade 9 Science-Over the next few classes we will explore some interesting biotechnologies, as we take a lot into some advancements in science that have helped to improve our lives over the past little while. Students will research one of these biotechnologies and present their findings to their peers in the coming days.

Grade 7 Science-As we complete our study of unit on the earth’s crust, students will continue working on their games, songs or stories, which they will use to write their chapter 5 assessment late this week or early next. We will then begin some learning stations as we move from the “Earth” portion to the “Space” portion of our unit called “Earth and Space.”

Grade 9 English Science-This week students will apply their knowledge of current electricity and learn about the carbon cycle, as they participate in an engineering design case study on wind energy. Working in small teams, students will create a windmill that they will test to see who is able to convert the most wind energy to electricity.
