Week of May 29th-June 2nd

The last week of May has arrived, but before we turn the calendar page to our last month of school together, we will most certainly have a busy week.

On Wednesday we will have our annual Wishmaker Wish Walk for the Children’s Wish Foundation. Intermediate students will participate in the walk. They will also have the opportunity to purchase tickets on a candy jar today and tomorrow, in an effort to raise funds for this wonderful organization.

On Thursday, we will be treated to a performance from our 4-6 drama students as they present their show “Adventures of a Comic Book Artist”

Finally, on Monday, June 5th, everyone is invited to come test drive a new Buick, as we particpate in the “Buick Drive for Your Students.” This is a very special fund-raising opportunity for our Gulf Shore family. More information on this event can be found on our school web page 🙂

Now let’s take a look at the learning that will take place this week…..

French-This week we will really dive into our novel Aller/Retour. I’m looking forward to lots of great discussions We will also finish up our formative writing assessment and we will listen to our oral language assessments; self-assessing and setting goals for next year.

Social Studies-After completing our maps of New France, we will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this territory. We will then take a look at the commerce and activities during this time period and how they relate to the physical territory.

Science-This week we will begin our unit on technology. We will first spend some time discussing forces and movements. This unit will also be our chance to practice many engineering based instant challenges, which I’m sure will prove to be a lot of fun! Our final project for this unit will be the construction of a windmill.

Grade 9 Science- This week we will have time for a quick review of the properties of fluids and optics. As these concepts were explored in great detail last year, this unit will simply be a refresher before we move on to our unit on technology.

Grade 7 Science-This week students will finish up their final projects for chapter 5 on the earth’s crust. We will then move into some learning stations for chapter 6 on space. Concepts we will be exploring include; the seasons, day and night, the properties of light and the phases of the moon.

Have a marvelous week!

Week of May 23rd-26th

It was so nice to see the sun this weekend! It is that time of year and students are reminded to dress appropriately for the hot and humid weather, as we enter into our second last week of May 🙂

This week will be a very short one for many intermediate students, as our 7-9 Concert Band heads to Nova Scotia for their annual Band Trip. I know everyone is looking forward to all the excitement and celebration the band this trip always brings. I can’t wait to hear all about it when you get back!

Here is a quick snapshot of what will take place over these next two school days together…..

French-Our work will continue with our new class novel study on the book Aller/Retour. We will also write our final formal writing assessment of the year, as we take a minute to look at how far we’ve come in our writing and also look forward to setting goals for the fall. As always, we will also spend time practicing our oral language skills, using images as our inspiration.

Social Studies-This week we will kick off our study of New France. Students will begin by mapping out the territory we will be exploring during the next few weeks. We will then discuss its strengths and weaknesses.

Science-As we finish up our unit on Space with our final assessment, we will look towards a new and exciting unit of our curriculum on technology and engineering, which we will begin next week.

Grade 9 Science- In our classes together this week we will finish up our discussions on energy and transformations, as we prepare for our assessment on these outcomes.

Grade 7 Science-Through a project of their choosing, students will work this week to present their understanding of the outcomes covered these past few week on our unit exploring the Earth’s crust. This project will serve as their final assessment on these outcomes.

All the best for a wonderful week ahead!

Week of May 15th-19th

I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend, especially all the wonderful mothers out there 🙂

This afternoon we will be treated to our annual presentation from the PEI Jazz and Blues Festival. This is always a big hit, as students from Holland College’s School of Performing Arts visit Gulf Shore to share their music.

On Wednesday evening there will be a Home and School meeting at 7:00pm in the Science Lab.

Mrs. Deblois’ Grade 2/3 class is still collecting plastic bags for recycling. Please think of them and bring any unneeded grocery bags into school this week.

Finally, many junior high students will participate in the zone track meet that will take place on Thursday, May 18th. I wish those sharks competing all the very best of luck as they work to secure their spot at the Provincial championships.

Now let us take a look at the learning taking place in the coming days….

French-This week students will finish up their book promotion assignments and we will begin a new class novel study on the book Aller/Retour. This book was written by David Schinkel and Yves Beauchesne, the same authors who wrote Mack le rouge, a novel the students read last year. We will spend some time this week predicting and observing, as we begin our read together. Similar to the novel Le complot, which we read earlier in the year, this story touches on many controversial issues that should make for many discussions over the next few weeks. We will also have the opportunity to compare Aller/Retour with Mack le rouge and note and analyze these authors’ style of writing.

Last week we visited the grade 7 class to complete our final oral evaluations together. This week we will do the same with the grade 6s, before beginning to listen to the recordings, as we think about our oral language goals for next year.

Social Studies-Over the next few classes we will be busy reviewing the concepts we’ve studied relating to the Renaissance. This week students will complete their final evaluations for this unit; a class debate and a written assessment. If time permits, we will then continue with our new unit, exploring what happened after the settlers arrived in New France.

Science-Our center work is always a huge highlight of our day and I’m sad to see it come to an end 🙁 This week students will return to any centers they didn’t have a change to fully complete. Then, everyone will have the opportunity to solidify their understanding by reviewing the key outcomes of this unit as a class and completing their final assessment for our unit on Space.

Grade 9 Science- This week we will finish up our look at chemical and physical transformations. We will then shift our focus to energy; looking at the different types and how it can be tranfered and transformed.

Grade 7 Science-As we move through our unit on the Earth, we will spend some time this week discussing tectonics plates and continental drift theory. We will then apply this knowledge, as we look at how mountains, volcanos are formed and why earthquakes happen.

Have a great week and a fantastic Victoria Day weekend!

Week of May 8th-12th

Finally a full week of school! I’m so looking forward to spending a whole five days with my students 🙂

The months of May and June are always very busy here at Gulf Shore. On Thursday we will attend a presentation from MADD Canada on the consequences of drinking and driving. More information on this activity is posted on our webpage.

Mrs. Deblois’ class is busy collecting plastic bags for recycling. Please think of them and bring any unneeded grocery bags into school over the next few days.

Here is a snapshot of what is planned for this week….

French-We’ve finished up publishing our calligrammes and we’ve spent some time discussing the importance of subject-verb-adjective agreements in our written language. This week we will continue to review these concepts, as we revisit a piece of writing to correct any errors we might notice. Work also continues on promoting our reading novels to our peers, as many students are almost finished their current novel. Time will be spent during out reading time this week brainstorming ideas as to how to promote these books to our peers. As work continues on oral language skills, we will pay a visit to the Grade 7 class and record our final interviews to begin the process of setting goals for next year.

Social Studies-We’ve been busy “exploring” the Explorers 😉 Discussions will wrap up in the next few days about the impacts that colonization had on life in the “New World.” We will then begin our customary comparison with another society during the same period of time and this time our focus will be on comparing Italy and Japan. We hope to wrap our study of the Renaissance up later on this week or early next, and we will then begin to prepare for our unit debate and final assessments.

Science-What fun we’ve been having working through our centers on the Solar System. Who knew toilet paper, play-doh and toothpaste could teach us so much about what is happening in the great beyond. Work will continue on these centers all week. We will then begin to solidify our understanding by reviewing the key outcomes of this unit as a class and making connections from our centers to new important information in our etext. 

Grade 9 Science- In class today, students finished up their Chapter 6 assessment on the organization of matter. Today we will begin to look at Chapter 7-Physical and Chemical Transformations. During the next few classes we will have the opportunity to discuss different changes in matter, as we decide if these changes are physical or chemical. Students will also have the chance to work in the lab to create their own experiment and will show how it represents either a physical or a chemical change.

Grade 7 Science-This week students will finish up their models of the internal structure of the Earth and we will begin to explore the lithosphere, the hydrosphere and the atmosphere.

Have a wonderful week!

Mme MacNevin

Week of May 1st-5th

May 1st already! Where has this year gone? What a great week we had last week. I was so impressed with my students’ behavior, as we were treated to an amazing concert from Izabelle. It is always special to see the French language come alive in situations like these. Bravo!

On Friday, May 5th there will be no classes for students as teachers attend their annual PEITF business meeting.

Even though this is another short week, lots of learning will most certainly take place 🙂 Now let’s have a look into what will be happening in our classes these next few days….

French-Our plan this week includes finishing and publishing our our calligrammes, continued work on written language accords, as we revisit our text ludique and look at ways to improve on our writing. We will also continue our oral language practice, as we inch closer to our final oral language assessment for the year. We also hope to finish up our independent reading novels and start working hard on our book promotion assignment; sharing our love of these new books with our classmates.

Social Studies-I was so impressed with the humanism assignments and the creativity and passion that was put into this project. Congrats on a super job everyone! Last week we wrapped up our discussions on the economy during the Renaissance and how it compares to ours today. This week we will take a look at the explorations of the “New World,” as students work to discover that it wasn’t so “new” after all and discuss the advancements in technology during the Renaissance that made way for explorers such as Columbus, Cartier and Magellan to make their way across oceans.

Science-Our unit on Space and our learning centers have begun. Students will work in groups this week to examine the components of our solar system in exciting ways including the use of toilet paper, Play-doh and Youtube 

Grade 9 Science- Today students will show their knowledge of the properties of matter as their work to explore the components that make up our urine. They will use simulated samples to test whether the urine is healthy or if it contains chemical properties that indicate a problem. They will then revise the concepts of Chapter 6 (Organisation and Properties of Matter) and prepare for their unit assessment on the outcomes we’ve been working on since we began our study of matter few weeks ago.

Grade 7 Science-With our biology unit now complete, this week we will move on to our unit on the Earth’s Crust. Students will begin this exciting chapter of our Science program discussing the internal structure of our planet’s core, as they work to make a model illustrating the different layers. We will then start to explore the lithosphere.

Have a fantastic week ahead!
