Happy Monday!

Hi folks,

I hope that everyone continues to stay safe and healthy. I just wanted to check in and say hello šŸ™‚
As you are now probably all aware, schools will remain closed up to at least May 11th. More information on what learning will look like moving foward will be discussed this week and communicated in the coming days. Until then, I continue to encourage you to take advantage of the materials found on the PSB webpage to help direct your child’s learning. I’ve heard some fantastic things that students and their families have been doing to keep themselves exploring and learning:) As always, please continue to reach out with any questions and concerns.

Have a great week!

New learning materials from the PSB

Good morning!

I hope everyone is doing well. Itā€™s been so wonderful to connect with many of my students over the past few days through email, Google Classroom comments, and Zoom; where yesterday, Mrs Caseley Smith and I chatted with many students in Grades 7 and 8. Please continue to reach out.

This morning, the Public Schools Branch released phase 2 of their suggestions for online learning. Below is the link for 7-9 Immersion. Again, these activities are simply suggestions to help facilitate continued learning from home. They will not be assessed. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Missing you! Vous me manquez!

I just wanted to touch base and let everyone know that Iā€™m missing you and thinking of you all during this difficult time. I will be posting a message to my students (en franƧais of course) on our Google Classroom pages over the next few days. Please reach out with any questions you may have (I will do my best to answer) or even just to catch up šŸ™‚

Take care

A busy day in the lab

Our Science Lab was buzzing this afternoon. Students in Grade 9 finallly completed their first two dissections. I’m always impressed with their engagement and excellent skills and behaviour. We may have a few surgeons amongst us šŸ˜‰

In Grade 8, as we work through our unit on rocks and minerals, students spent their class today “mining” in chocolate chip cookie “rocks.” Each colour of chocolate candy represented a different mineral. Students used their “tools” aka a paper clip and a toothpick to dig out the minerals, clean them, weigh them and then calculate their total values. We learned that this process takes both time and patience šŸ™‚

Week of March 9th-13th

Happy Monday! I hope everyone has adjusted well to the time change. While I’m sure it will make today a little more difficult for many, it is a welcomed sign that spring is in the air!

I want to thank everyone for your participation in last weekā€™s Student-Led Conferences. It is always a pleasure to share in your childā€™s learning and to hear my students articulate their goals for the coming weeks. We will be revisiting these goals after the March Break to make sure everyone has the tools they need to finish off our final few months together on a high note šŸ™‚

Here is a quick snapshot into what we will be working on during our last few days together before everyone takes off for some much needed rest and relaxation over the March Breakā€¦

French-We continue moving through our book club novels; discussing characters, connections and themes. Students have been recording their discussions using Flipgrid. This week, one of those discussions will serve as an assessment of their oral language skills in addition to their reading skills.

Science-As we work through our unit on rocks and minerals, we will keep exploring how to use a key to properly identify minerals based on their characteristics. Our focus will shift later on in the week to soil, as we explore its layers and components.

Grade 9 Science-After a delivery delay and several storm days and field trips, dissections begin TOMORROW!!! This week we will dissect a sheepā€™s heart and a pigā€™s kidney. As promised, I will be posting some pictures later on this week. We will also wrap up our look into biotechnologies with our final assessment on Chapter 5.

Grade 7 Science-This week students will finish up and present their 3D cell models. We will also begin to prepare for our quiz on sections 4.1-4.3 (characteristics of life, organelles of the cell, differences between plant and animal cells and the microscope) which will take place on Day 5.

Core French 4-9-In Grades 4-6, students will finish up work on their final projects for our unit about our daily activities. They are in the process of creating either a comic strip, a slideshow or a poster to describe the most important parts of their day; combining all their knowledge and vocabulary from the past few months. They will present these projects before the break.

In Grades 7-9, we will wrap up our practice of vocabulary related to weather, as we work towards planning on outing and begin our discussions around directions and maps.

I wish you all the luck of the Irish and a fantastic March Break! I cannot wait to hear all about it when classes resume on Monday, March 23rd.

Week of March 2nd-6th

Another busy week is upon us here at Gulf Shore. Students will be spending many hours over the next few days getting ready for our Student Learning Conferences which will take place on Thursday evening and all day on Friday. If you havenā€™t already signed up for your childā€™s conference please do so as soon as possible using the link located on our school webpage.

On Tuesday morning (March 3rd) band students will travel to the College of Piping in Summerside for the annual PEI Band Days. This is always a highlight for our band students as they get to perform and participate in workshops to help improve their skills. They will return to school around 1:00pm.

On Wednesday, the Grades 7-9 Immersion Students will be heading to Charlottetown to see a francophone magician/illusionist. More information on this field trip will be coming home this afternoon. Below is a link to the memo in case it doesn’t arrive home.

Here is a snapshot into our learning for this weekā€¦

French-We continue to move forward in our book clubs. Students are reading and discussing both the explicit and implicit parts of their novels in their small groups. Our class discussions this week will focus on themes and messages, as this was an area that many students struggled during our reading of ā€œLe complot.ā€ We will also be taking the time to prepare for our conferences; goal setting and reflecting on our learning from the past few months.

Science-This week we will dive deeper into our study of minerals. Students will work to ā€œextractā€ minerals from chocolate cookies and identify types of minerals using a key. They will also learn about uses of minerals in our daily lives.

Grade 9 Science-The exciting news is that our organs have finally arrived!!! Students will wrap up their case study on biotechnology and then we will begin our dissections of the heart, the kidney and a chicken leg. Stay tuned for some pictures of these activities in the coming days.

Grade 7 Science-This week we will return to our study of plant and animal cells. Students will work to create a 3D model of either a plant or animal cell. We will also look at how a microscope works as we use it to identify parts of cells.

Core French 4-9- In 4-6, students will continue to work on their final projects for our unit about our daily activities. They are in the process of creating either a comic strip, a slideshow or a poster to describe the most important parts of their day; combining all their knowledge and vocabulary from the past few months.

In Grades 7-9, we continue to practice vocabulary related to weather, as we work towards planning on outing.

Have a fantastic week! I look forward to meeting with you on Thursday and Friday.
