Week of December 13-17

Well folks, we have arrived at the last week of school for this year. There is lots of excitement in the air as everyone looks ahead to our two-week holiday vacation. Like most of 2021, the last week will look at little different this year, but nonetheless, we will take the time to celebrate and have some fun together 😉

Our leadership team has been working hard to put together some safe and virtual activities to help put us in the festive spirit. Please refer to our school webpage for a detailed list of events including many dress up days, trivia, coffee house, and the worldwide premiere of our 2021 school Christmas concert. Here is the schedule for the week so far:

Kick off with Colors Monday – Christmas colors and ugly sweater – Door decoration contest begins
Wear a Toque Tuesday – Just Dance
Winter Wednesday – Wear winter colors (blues, whites) Open-mike Coffee house
Thoughtful Thursday – Bring a food item, Make a card or craft for the seniors in our community
Final Bash Friday – Door announcement –PJ day and “line the halls” carol sing

Now let’s take a look at what will be happening during our classes during this last school week of 2020
.

French-As we work through our unit “Bon voyage” students will continue to plan out their travel journals, which we will put together after the break.

Our other main priority over the next few days is to continue our read aloud “Mamie Gangster” and of course as you can imagine, our oral language warm-ups this week will have a holiday theme 🙂

Science-As we look to towards the final section of our unit on living things, this week we will begin our study of human reproduction. To begin, we will learn about the part of the female and male reproductive systems and have a short quiz on these parts before heading home for the holidays.

Grade 9 Science-Today, students will write their quiz on atoms, elements and the periodic table. They will also present their “Atomix” cards to their peers. Finally, we will wrap up 2021 with a few instant challenges, as we discuss what is good and bad science and how to identify between the two.

Grade 7 Science-As we work our way through our ecology unit, we will begin to discuss taxonomy and habitats. These concepts will be important for a major project which students will start when we return after the break, where they will research and present their learning from Chapter 3 through the eyes of an animal of their choosing.

Grade 9 English Science-This week we will look at how to draw diagrams of atoms using the information on subatomic particles we learned last week. Students will also test their knowledge of the concepts covered these past few weeks through a in-class assignment. Finally, to celebrate the holidays, students will create a “Chemis-tree” where they will combine their understanding of the periodic table with their creativity.

Have a safe and happy holiday season! I look forward to hearing all about it when students return on January, 4, 2022!

Week of December 6-10

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here in at Gulf Shore, as we enter the first week of December and the last 10 school days of 2021.

On Thursday, December 9th, band students will present their annual Christmas show beginning at 7pm. All attendees 12 years of age or older must wear a mask and show their PEI Vax Pass upon entry. What a treat it will be to finally hear our bands in concert in person again 🙂

There are still a few students who have not returned their signed report card envelope and portfolios. Please get these in as soon as possible, as we like to reuse them for our second term reports.

Now let’s have a look at the learning that will be taking place during our classes this coming week

French-Though it took a few tries, technology was finally on our side and we now have access to our new classroom resource #LaClasse. We have begun our first unit “Bon voyage.” Our focus this week will be on learning more about the passĂ© compose verb tense and those verbs that use the verb “ĂȘtre” when forming these verbs. We will also begin the first part of our travel journals, where students will reflect upon a past trip or excursion and create a list of events and activities they completed during their trip.

Our reading of “Mamie Gangster” also continues this week. Students will work in small groups this week to film their discussions using Flipgrid about their ideas, opinions and connections to this text.

Finally, as we begin the holiday season, many of our oral language warm-ups this week will have the holiday feel.
Science-During our classes together this week, we will finish up our chapter on the cell and how substances move between the cell and its environment. The quiz on chapter 3 will take place on Wednesday (Day 5).

Grade 9 Science-This week we will wrap up our section on elements, atoms, molecules and the periodic table with a project entitled “Atomix.” Students will work to create game cards based on all their learning from the past few months. This will also serve as a great way to review for their quiz on these concepts which will take place on Monday, December 13th (Day 2).

Grade 7 Science-We have officially completed our unit on chemistry. This week students will begin their new unit on biology entitled “L’univers vivant”-“The living world”. To ease in to this unit before the holidays we will review some of the ecology concepts they studied in Grade 6 and each student will choose an animal which they will research in various ways throughout the unit.

Grade 9 English Science-Today students will write a mini quiz on the names and symbols of the first 20 elements on the periodic table. Following this assessment, we will dive deeper into the atom, exploring subatomic particles and beginning to learn how to use the periodic table to find out how many protons, electrons and neutrons each atom has.

Have a marvelous Monday and a wonderful week!
