Week of May 29-June 2

This week we turn the calendar over to June and the last month of the school year. The next few weeks will be jam-packed as always, as we wrap up our learning and begin to celebrate the accomplishments of our Gulf Shore family these past 10 months.

This will also be our first full week of school in a while. I’m looking forward to a wonderful week of learning!

Here is a sneak peek into what will be taking place in the coming days.

French-Over the next few classes we will wrap up assessments for our unit in #LaClasse. We will also dive deeper into the comic strip, as we look at the different characteristics of this text form and begin writing a few together.

Science-Tomorrow, students will finish up their oral presentations. On Wednesday, they will write their assessment on the outcomes related to Space (chapter 6). Finally, later on this week or early next week, we will kick off our final unit of the year: technology and engineering, beginning with a few fun instant challenges.

Grade 9 Science-Our work looking at the parts and functions of the musculoskeletal system continues this week. We will even “dissect” a chicken leg, as we get up close and personal with bones and muscles. Students are reminded of their quiz on these concepts which will take place on Friday, June 2nd. There is a study guide and some review games in Google Classroom to help them to study.

Grade 7 Science-This week we will finish up our look at the earth’s crust. Students will then begin their project for these outcomes, where they will create a short story, game or song outlining what they’ve learned.

Grade 9 English Science-After making some adjustments to them, students will take their electric cars on a final test drive this week. They will also prepare for and write their chapter 11 assessment (current electricity) and begin a case study on wind energy.

Have a fantastic week!

Week of May 22-26

We are now into our last full week of May! Can you believe it! I hope that everyone had a wonderful long weekend and is ready to take on the last few weeks of the school year.

Here is a snapshot into what will be happening during our time together this week…

French-Students will present their “investigative reports” over the next few classes. With that finished, we will officially begin our unit on the comic strip. This will kick off with some exploration of many different comic strips and the introduction to the vocabulary necessary to create a comic. We will also spend some time wrapping up our unit in #LaClasse with some oral and written language assessments.

Science-There were a few interruptions to our schedule last week that have put us behind, so this week we will wrap up our learning centers on Space. Students will be given time to tidy up any stations they may have not had a chance to finish and/or missed and prepare themselves for their upcoming assessment on these concepts. We will also begin hearing the oral presentations groups created outlining some important space missions over the years.

Grade 9 Science-We will officially dive into the musculoskeletal system over the next few days, looking at its organs and tissues and their functions.

Grade 7 Science-Our study of the Earth continues, as we look into how volcanoes, earthquakes and mountains are formed. We will then plot out some of the most famous ones, as students work in Google Maps to discover the “Ring of Fire”.

Grade 9 English Science-This week we will begin to wrap up our study of current electricity. Students will test out their electric cars, finish up their look into Ohm’s law and begin to work on reviewing for their assessment on the concepts in chapter 11. A study guide and some review games will be posted shortly to their Google Classroom.

Wishing you all a great week ahead!

Week of May 15-19

I hope that everyone had a relaxing weekend. Summer is certainly inching its way closer to us 😊

Just a reminder that there will be no classes for students on Friday, May 19th, as teachers and staff will be attending PD sessions and again on Monday, May 22nd for the Victoria Day holiday.

Now here is a sneak peek into the learning taking place during our classes this week.

French-Over the next few days students will wrap up their interviews and put together their reports that they will present to the class before the weekend. We will also continue our oral language warm-ups and if time permits, begin to explore comic strips, which will be our next unit of study.

Science-This week we will wrap up our learning centers on Space. Students will be given time to tidy up any stations they may have not had a chance to finish and/or missed and prepare themselves for their upcoming assessment on these concepts. We will also begin hearing the oral presentations groups created outlining some important space missions over the years.

Grade 9 Science-Presentations will begin today on our human body systems projects. Each expert group will teach their classmates about their specific system. Then, later on this week, students will consolidate their learning and begin to look into our final system which we will study together: the musculoskeletal system.

Grade 7 Science-The second half of chapter 5 will kick off tomorrow with our look at Pangea. Students will examine continental drift theory and begin to understand the importance of tectonic plates and their movements.

Grade 9 English Science-As we move through out unit on current electricity, this week students will look at Ohm’s Law, as they study resistance, voltage and current. We will also spend some time in the lab finishing up our electric cars.

Have a fantastic week and a marvelous long weekend!

Week of May 8-12

Well the Gulf Shore Games have officially begun! We had an amazing assembly on Thursday to kick up this school spirit initiative that will continue for the rest of the school year. Go Great Whites 😉

This will be our first full week in a while and it will most definitely be busy! Let’s take a look….

French-As we work through our unit in #LaClasse on the work of a journalist, students will spend time this week conducting their interviews and putting their pieces together. We will also continue to work at conjugating verbs in the imperfect tense and of course work on our oral language goals through our interactive warm-ups.

Science-Students are working through their learning centres on Space. We will continue this throughout this week and into early next week, before presenting our findings and preparing for our assessment on these outcomes.

Grade 9 Science-Work is well underway for our project on human body systems. Teams are working to create their models, research the functions and diseases related to their system and explain how their system interacts with others. Students will have a few more classes to finish up and we will look at presenting later this week or early next.

Grade 7 Science-Today we will finish up the first half of chapter 5 on the Earth’s crust. We will then begin to review those outcomes and prepare for our quiz later on this week. As always, a study guide and some review materials can be found in Google Classroom.

Grade 9 English Science-We are moving along nicely through our unit on electricity. This week students will learn more about the components of a circuit and will work in the lab to create some circuits of their own.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!

Week of May 1-5

I cannot believe that we are flipping the calendar over to May and our second last month of the school year. It will fly by I’m sure, but as I’ve said before, we still have lots of great learning left 😊

This will be the last week for our yearbook sales. Please refer to our school Facebook page for the code for our online purchasing option. You can also send in your $20 to Donna in the office to reserve a copy of this year’s edition.

This will be a four-day week, as on Friday, May 5th, teachers and support staff will hold their annual union meetings.

Now let’s take a look at what will be taking place during our classes together this week….

French-We continue our unit on reporting in #LaClasse. Students now have a good idea of what this type of text looks like and will spend some time this week planning their interviews and reports. We will also continue to work on verbs in the past tense (imparfait) which will be necessary for their projects. Additionally, we continue to read our independent novels and discuss them and as always, work on our oral language goals through our daily warm-up activities.

Science-This week our focus will move them Earth to Space as we begin some learning centers that will help us to meet the outcomes of this unit (Chapter 6). Students will visit 9 different stations over the next few weeks learning about topic such as the planets of our solar system, comets, meteors, gravity and space exploration just to name a few.

Grade 9 Science-As we continue our look into the human body, over the next few classes students will work in teams to research and present one of four human body systems to the class. They will need to create a model or diagram of their system, research three diseases or conditions that can impact their system and explain their system’s functions and parts to their peers. All assignment criteria and some helpful resources for completing this project can be found in Google Classroom.

Grade 7 Science-This week will take a look at the Earth’s spheres. We will begin with the hydrosphere, exploring the water found on our planet and then later on this week, we will take a look at the layers of the atmosphere.

Grade 9 English Science-Now that we know about static electricity, we will shift our focus into current electricity. Students will begin this section by exploring the differences between the two and begin creating some simple circuits, building on their knowledge from Grade 6 and exploring the necessary components of a both series and parallel circuits.

Have a wonderful week!
