Week of June 21-25 and June 28

Here we are officially at the end of the 2020-2021 school year and our last few days together. What a blessing it has been, and how fortunate I consider myself, to have had the opportunity to teach in person these past ten months. PEI truly is the best place to be!
This week and next Monday (the last day of school :)) will be spent reflecting on our year, tying up loose ends, celebrating our progress and success and looking ahead to the 2021-2022 school year in September.

On Thursday, students are encouraged to bring a supplementary bag or backpack with them to school in addition to their regular one, as we will be cleaning out our desks and lockers on that day. Students are also reminded to check under beds, in cupboards and drawers and on shelves for any library or classroom books or textbooks that will need to be returned to the school this week.

On Friday, we will be boarding the bus for Summerside for a movie and some ice cream. Fingers crossed for good weather, as we will also be stopping for a picnic lunch. Students should thus bring something for lunch that will not need to be heated on that day.

Finally, on Monday, June 28, we will have our annual Gulf Shore Celebration of Learning. As has been the theme this school year, it will be held COVID style. Our Grade 9 class will be in the Multipurpose Room, while all others will be in their classrooms watching through a Google Meet.

Now let’s take a look at what our final week has in store….

French-Students have done a fantastic job on their vision boards. This week we will finish up presenting these to our classmates. The remainder of our classes together will be spent taking every opportunity we can to speak in French through some games and instant challenges, as I know many may not have the opportunity to speak a lot through the summer.

Science-Our wind turbines are starting to take shape! Today through Wednesday, students will finish construction and practice tests in preparation for our final competition on Thursday.

Grade 9 Science-The moment many students in Grade 9 have been waiting all year for will take place this week, as we combine our understanding of the systems of the human body and take part in the dissection of a fetal pig. What a fun way to finish out my time with this great group of students 🙂

Grade 7 Science-During our final two classes today, students will use a variety of materials to create a simple technical object. This morning, they will show their understanding of the forces and movements at play and travel through the design process to show how their object works and what it is made of, before building and presenting it to the class later on this afternoon.

Grade 5-9 Core French-Students are hard at work creating a game as their final project for our unit on animals. We will then play these games together later on this week.

In Grades 7-9, using the floor plan of the school as their guide, students will finish their projects where using a map of the school they will give directions to various places around the school, both orally and on paper.

I want to thank everyone for making this year so special! Despite the pandemic, our Gulf Shore family flourished. I am so lucky to be a part of this school community. Best of luck to the Grade 9 class as they head off to Bluefield in the fall. I look forward to seeing everyone else when classes resume in September.

Have an AMAZING summer! Stay safe and have fun!

Week of June 14-18

With only 11 school days left before the end of the year, all of us here at Gulf Shore will be very busy over the next few weeks wrapping up and celebrating our learning.

Our intermediate students will be heading to Summerside to watch a movie and have a picnic lunch. The cost of the movie is $8 and if students wish to have popcorn and a drink the cost is $9 for a total of $17. If you haven’t already done so, please have all forms and money back in to the school by June 15, so that we can send out final numbers along to the theatre.

Here is a snapshot of what we will be working on these next few days….

French-We began the year with students creating a visual display that they then presented to introduce themselves. To book end our time together, students will finish the year with another visual presentation. This time, they will create a representation of their future, as they illustrate their goals for the summer, the upcoming school year and their long-term goals for high school and beyond. I look forward to seeing not only their presentations, but in hearing their oral language progress. We will also spend some time finishing up our year-end assessments and we will definitely have the time for some instant challenges along the way 😉

Science-Tomorrow, students will write their final evaluation of the year on the outcomes from Chapter 8 (Simple machines). Once this is complete, our focus will shift entirely to our final project: creating a wind turbine. Over the past few months, we have been spending one day a cycle researching and designing our turbines and this week and next we will bring them to life. This is always an exciting part of the Grade 8 year and I’m excited to see my these young engineers will come up with 🙂

Grade 9 Science-Our goal this week will be to learn about the components of both the excretory and muscular systems, as we prepare for our final project of the year-the dissection of a fetal pig, which will take place late next week.

Grade 7 Science-As we work through our technology unit, this week we will wrap up our look at forces and movements and begin to explore the design process in greater detail.

Grade 5-9 Core French-Showcasing their knowledge from throughout the year, students will create both a board game and some 3D dice which will serve not only a fun way to wrap up our learning, but also as a review of the concepts we’ve been exploring together these past few months.

In Grades 7-9, using the floor plan of the school as their guide, students will work in teams to give directions to various places around the school, both orally and on paper, as we work to finish up our unit on directions.

Have a wonderful week!

Week of June 7-11

The first full week of June is here and we have only 16 learning days left together. This week and next will be filled with lots of final assessments as we wrap up this year’s curriculum and look ahead to September.

Thursday, June 10th will be COVID-19 vaccination day for our Grade 7-9 students. Public Health will administer these vaccines. All permission forms were due back last week.

Finally, as we get ready to celebrate the success of the 2020-2021 school year, an information sheet will be sent home today regarding this year’s field trip. Our intermediate students will be heading to Summerside to watch a movie and have a picnic lunch. The cost of the movie is $8 and if students wish to have popcorn and a drink the cost is $9 for a total of $17. Please have all forms and money back in to the school by June 15, so that we can send out final numbers along to the theatre.

Now here is a look into what will be taking place in our classrooms this week…

French-The creative juices are flowing as we work our way through our poetry unit. Students are now into the process of revising and editing their poems before turning them into artwork. I cannot wait to see the finished pieces! Much of our time this week will also be spent taking a look back on our oral language progress and completing assessments to showcase how far we’ve come 🙂

Science-This afternoon, students will present their prototype of a simple machine to the class. We will then spend the rest of the week completing chapter 8 and preparing for our final quiz of the year, which will happen next week.

Grade 9 Science-In the lab, we will finish out our look at the circulatory system and prepare for our assessment on these concepts, before shifting our focus to the excretory system.

Grade 7 Science-We have officially entered into the unit of the Grade 7 program: L’univers technologique. Students will spend the next few classes learning about forces, mouvements and the engineering design process.

Grade 5-9 Core French-As we explore the animal kingdom and learn ways to describe animals and their behavour, this week students will work on creating and describing a class mascot.

In Grades 7-9, students will head outside to create an obstacle course and direct their peers to various objects around it using the vocabulary related to directions we’ve been covering these past few weeks.

Have a fantastic week!
