Week of May 13-17

We have reached the halfway point of the month of May. Wow! It is so hard to believe that we are already almost done with another our school year. The next few weeks will most definitely be jam-packed, as we prepare for our band and exploratory trips at the end of the month.

Permission forms, for the field trips that those students who are not going on the band trip will be taking in during the last week of May, were sent home late last week. The total cost of all three days is $20. Please send along that payment along with the forms in the next few days.

There are still a few days left to get your yearbook order in, but they are almost sold out, so please make sure to send your order to Donna in the office as soon as possible, so that you don’t miss out!

Now let’s look at what will be happening during our class time this week….

Grade 7 Science-We are moving along in our unit on the Earth’s Crust. This week we will finish up our mineral identification lab and write a short assignment to show our understanding of these concepts. If time permits, we will then begin to look at the three different types of rocks, their properties and characteristics and learn how they are formed.

Grade 7 Core-We will continue to discuss and explore popular francophone artists and music these next few days. Students will also learn vocabulary related to expressing their opinions on the pieces they listen to and how the music makes them feel.

Grade 9 Immersion Science-As we dive deeper into our first section of our biology unit, we will work this week to learn more about DNA and genetics. We will learn about the processes of mitosis and meiosis and how cells divide. Students will also gain a deeper understanding of genetic diversity and its importance by making observations on some physical traits such as eye colour in their peers.

Grade 8 Science-This week we will finish up our unit on heat. Students will write their unit test on Wednesday, so we will spend the next few days reviewing for that assessment. Students can find many resources to help them to study in their Google Classroom. They will also work on creating a passive heat transfer device, that we will test out late this week or early next week.

Grade 7 STEM-This week, we will finish and test out/present our gumball machines. We will then begin our second major design project-the creation of a new toy, but before we do, we will take some time to explore some careers that STEM can offer.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!

Week of May 6-10

I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend and got out to enjoy some of the beautiful spring weather.

Yearbook sales will wrap up this week, so if you were looking to place an order, please get it into Donna in the office before Friday.
Here is what is planned for our first fully week of May…..

Grade 7 Science-Today, students will present their heat transfer device to their peers, as we wrap up our final project for this unit. With that complete, we will shift our focus onto our last unit of the year “Earth’s Crust.” We will kick off this new unit by learning about the properties of minerals, as we examine some minerals commonly found in Canada.

Grade 7 Core-This week we continue our study of music, as students explore read through a comic strip on a school talent show and a forum for young musicians. We will also spend some time looking at the biographies and music of several popular francophone singers.

Grade 9 Immersion Science-Today and tomorrow, we will review our final concepts of the properties of waves and fluids. On Wednesday, students will write their assessment on these outcomes before we kick off our biology unit on Thursday and Friday. We will begin this section by looking back on the topics we studied in grades 7 and 8, before taking a deeper look at DNA and genetics.

Grade 8 Science-Our focus this week, as we enter the last section of our unit on heat, will be exploring ways that heat is transferred. We will discuss conduction, convection, and radiation, experimenting with popcorn to see all three types of heat transfer in action.

Grade 7 STEM-This week, we will wrap up our first tests for our gumball machines and reflect on our designs so far. As always, our daily warm-ups will challenge us to think outside the box.

Have a marvelous Monday and an excellent week!
