Week of June 14-18

With only 11 school days left before the end of the year, all of us here at Gulf Shore will be very busy over the next few weeks wrapping up and celebrating our learning.

Our intermediate students will be heading to Summerside to watch a movie and have a picnic lunch. The cost of the movie is $8 and if students wish to have popcorn and a drink the cost is $9 for a total of $17. If you haven’t already done so, please have all forms and money back in to the school by June 15, so that we can send out final numbers along to the theatre.

Here is a snapshot of what we will be working on these next few days….

French-We began the year with students creating a visual display that they then presented to introduce themselves. To book end our time together, students will finish the year with another visual presentation. This time, they will create a representation of their future, as they illustrate their goals for the summer, the upcoming school year and their long-term goals for high school and beyond. I look forward to seeing not only their presentations, but in hearing their oral language progress. We will also spend some time finishing up our year-end assessments and we will definitely have the time for some instant challenges along the way 😉

Science-Tomorrow, students will write their final evaluation of the year on the outcomes from Chapter 8 (Simple machines). Once this is complete, our focus will shift entirely to our final project: creating a wind turbine. Over the past few months, we have been spending one day a cycle researching and designing our turbines and this week and next we will bring them to life. This is always an exciting part of the Grade 8 year and I’m excited to see my these young engineers will come up with 🙂

Grade 9 Science-Our goal this week will be to learn about the components of both the excretory and muscular systems, as we prepare for our final project of the year-the dissection of a fetal pig, which will take place late next week.

Grade 7 Science-As we work through our technology unit, this week we will wrap up our look at forces and movements and begin to explore the design process in greater detail.

Grade 5-9 Core French-Showcasing their knowledge from throughout the year, students will create both a board game and some 3D dice which will serve not only a fun way to wrap up our learning, but also as a review of the concepts we’ve been exploring together these past few months.

In Grades 7-9, using the floor plan of the school as their guide, students will work in teams to give directions to various places around the school, both orally and on paper, as we work to finish up our unit on directions.

Have a wonderful week!
